Walmart Expands Into Home Energy Services

Walmart’s partnership with Base Power expands its business beyond traditional retail operations. The agreement introduces residential energy solutions through Walmart and Sam’s Club locations. Additionally, the investment strengthens Walmart’s involvement in services that address household energy expenses and electricity reliability.

Base Power develops home battery systems that help households manage electricity costs. The systems store energy and provide backup power during grid outages. Consequently, customers can access an alternative power source when regular electricity services become unavailable.

The partnership will initially focus on Texas, where Base Power has established its largest operating market. Beginning in November, eligible customers can enroll in Base Power battery offerings. Participating Walmart and Sam’s Club locations will provide access to enrollment and information about available services.

20% Discount Targets Battery Installation Costs

The agreement includes a 20% discount on Base Power’s standard upfront battery installation fee. Customers and Sam’s Club members must enroll in an eligible offering to receive the discount. However, the promotion applies only at participating retail locations and remains subject to eligibility requirements.

Base Power follows an ownership model that differs from traditional whole-home backup systems. The company installs, owns and maintains the residential battery equipment. Customers pay an upfront installation fee, which Base describes as substantially lower than traditional whole-home backup solutions.

Base Power offers electricity plans in eligible Texas service areas. These plans aim to help participating households reduce their electricity bills. However, available products, installation requirements, pricing and potential savings depend on location, utility service areas and individual customer circumstances.

The arrangement gives Walmart another way to connect its retail network with household services. Customers can meet Base representatives inside participating stores and discuss available energy options. They can also ask questions and complete enrollment through those representatives.

Texas Provides the Starting Market for Expansion

Texas represents Base Power’s largest and most established market for residential energy services. The company currently serves more than 35,000 members across the state. More than 20,000 households have installed Base battery systems in their homes.

The remaining members receive electricity services through Base Power. These figures establish Texas as the initial market for Walmart’s new energy offering. Furthermore, the existing customer base provides an established platform for introducing the partnership.

Walmart plans to introduce the services in Texas before expanding into additional locations and markets. However, the company has not identified specific markets or dates for future expansion. The initial rollout will therefore concentrate on participating Texas Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.

The partnership adds another service category to Walmart’s existing retail offering. It also creates a distribution channel for Base Power’s residential battery products. Through the arrangement, both companies will target households seeking lower energy costs and backup electricity options.
