Chevron Reports Higher Earnings as Refining Margins Strengthen
Chevron reported third-quarter earnings of $9.92 billion, compared with $3.54 billion during the same period in 2025. Adjusted earnings reached $10.36 billion, equivalent to $5.28 per diluted share. However, reported diluted earnings per share reached $5.06, compared with $1.82 a year earlier.
The company attributed its stronger annual earnings to reliable operations, higher refined product margins, and improved crude oil realizations. However, unfavorable timing effects from rising energy prices partially offset these gains. Chevron also recorded a $160 million legal reserve, a $110 million impairment, and $24 million in pension settlement costs.
Adjusted earnings per share increased from $1.85 in third-quarter 2025 to $5.28 in 2026. Furthermore, year-to-date adjusted earnings reached $25.13 billion, compared with $10.49 billion previously. The company also recorded $12.73 in adjusted diluted earnings per share, against $5.80 last year.
Refining Performance and Production Support Business Growth
Chevron’s downstream segment delivered stronger results as higher refining margins supported earnings growth. U.S. downstream earnings reached $3.59 billion, compared with $638 million in third-quarter 2025. Additionally, international downstream earnings increased to $1.35 billion from $499 million during the previous year.
U.S. refinery crude throughput reached a record 1.09 million barrels per day during the quarter. The refineries also maintained crude unit capacity utilization near 98%, reflecting reliable operating performance. However, international refined product sales declined 9% because of supply disruptions linked to Middle East conflict.
Upstream operations generated $5.70 billion in earnings, compared with $3.30 billion a year earlier. U.S. upstream earnings reached $3.29 billion, while international upstream earnings contributed $2.41 billion. Meanwhile, total net oil-equivalent production averaged 3.98 million barrels daily, down from 4.09 million barrels in 2025.
Chevron Strengthens Cash Flow and Expands Investment Plans
Chevron generated $16 billion in cash flow from operations during the third quarter, compared with $9.4 billion previously. Additionally, free cash flow reached $12 billion, while adjusted free cash flow totaled $14.2 billion. The company also reduced total debt by $3.5 billion and net debt by $7.8 billion.
The company plans to invest $7 billion in its Venezuelan joint ventures over the next five years. The investment aims to increase production through projects focused on long-term growth and lower-cost operations. Additionally, Chevron secured agreements to reduce Bakken midstream costs by approximately 50%.
Chevron also announced an offshore oil and natural gas condensate discovery in Angola’s Lower Congo Basin. Furthermore, it signed an exploration agreement with Libya’s National Oil Corporation for the Sirte Basin. The company also started operations at its Louisiana oilseed-processing facility, expanding feedstock supplies for transportation fuels.
Chevron’s board declared a quarterly dividend of $1.78 per share, payable on December 10, 2026. Shareholders must appear on company records by November 18 to qualify for payment. These results highlight stronger refining contributions, improved annual earnings, and continued investment across Chevron’s global energy operations.
