USD/CLP Outlook: Oil Just Tumbled. Why Isn’t the Chilean Peso Rising?

USD/CLP was trading at 971.82 at 13:01 GMT on Thursday, November 5, up 0.19%. The Chilean peso slipped even as oil prices extended a sharp decline following the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections.

Why Is the Chilean Peso Weaker Today?

Thursday’s decline came after the peso had recovered from levels near 1,000 per dollar. The US currency traded between 968.05 and 973.71 during the session, regaining only a small part of that earlier drop. At 971.82, the dollar was more expensive than at Wednesday’s close but still bought about 28 fewer pesos than it did near 1,000.

There was no clear Chile-specific trigger for Thursday’s move. What stood out was that a sharp fall in crude, normally welcome for an energy importer, was not enough to lift the peso on the day. A lower oil price can improve Chile’s trade position over time, while the exchange rate can move much faster as traders adjust their dollar holdings.

How Did the US Midterm Results Affect Oil Prices?

Brent crude traded near $93.50 a barrel on Thursday after tumbling 8.7% the previous session, Reuters reported. Oil traders weighed whether the Democratic victory could hasten an end to the US-Israeli war with Iran, easing fears of prolonged supply disruptions. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones rallied on Wednesday, while the Chilean peso slipped against the dollar on Thursday.

For Chile, the effect depends on how long oil stays cheaper. A sustained decline would reduce the dollars needed to pay for imported energy. But if the peso weakens, the local-currency savings shrink. That is why an oil selloff can improve the outlook for Chile’s import bill without immediately strengthening its currency.

What Do Copper Prices Mean for USD/CLP?

Copper is one of Chile’s largest sources of export earnings. When copper prices rise, exporters can bring in more dollars for the same volume of shipments, which can support the peso. When prices fall, lower export receipts can offset part of the benefit from cheaper imported oil.

That gives traders a more useful test than the oil price alone. If crude stays lower and copper holds up, both sides of Chile’s trade balance could benefit. If copper weakens or the US dollar strengthens broadly, the peso could remain under pressure even with Brent below $100.

USD/CLP Outlook: Can the Chilean Peso Recover?

Thursday’s move was small compared with the peso’s recent recovery from near 1,000 per dollar. The next question is whether falling oil prices are accompanied by resilient copper prices and a softer US dollar. That combination would give the peso a stronger basis to regain ground. If the dollar keeps firming or copper comes under pressure, cheaper oil may do more for Chile’s import bill than for its exchange rate.

The dollar edged higher against the Chilean peso even as it slipped to a five-week low against a basket of major currencies, a divergence worth keeping in mind when reading our US Dollar Index forecast.

How much is US$100 in Chilean pesos today?

At the November 5 rate of 971.82, US$100 was worth about CLP 97,182, before fees or exchange spreads.

Why is the live dollar rate different from Chile’s dólar observado?

The dólar observado is the Central Bank of Chile’s official daily reference rate, based on transactions from the previous banking day. The live USD/CLP rate changes as trades take place, so the two figures can differ on the same day.

Why did the dollar rise in Chile even as oil prices fell?

Cheaper oil can reduce Chile’s import costs if the decline lasts, but it doesn’t automatically strengthen the peso. Copper prices matter for Chile’s export earnings, and moves in the US dollar can outweigh the benefit of cheaper oil in a single session. There was no confirmed trigger for Thursday’s modest rise in USD/CLP.
