Bank of America Warns Customers on Hook if They Hand Bank Logins to AI Agents

Bank of America is warning customers that they could be on the hook for what happens if they hand their banking logins to an AI agent.

In an email to customers titled “Protecting your finances in the AI World,” the bank urges people to never share their username and password with another person or an outside service, reports TechCrunch.

The warning specifically covers “an AI-enabled tool or agent that offers to act on your behalf.”

A Bank of America spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the email, which was first posted on social media, is real.

The bank also tells customers that the risk falls on them if they share their logins anyway.

“If you do share your credentials, keep in mind that you’re responsible for activity resulting from that access.”

Handing a banking password to an AI assistant could let it do things with the customer’s money without them knowing, or lead the bank to lock the account if it thinks someone is breaking in.

A security flaw in the AI tool could also leak the login to hackers.

Bank of America’s guidance on outside apps says customers should instead use its consent-based option, where they log in directly with the bank and can cut off an app’s access at any time.

The bank says the safest way to stop an app that already has a customer’s login is to change the password.

The Daily Hodl reported earlier this month that JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are moving to block or restrict AI agents after finding unauthorized bots inside customer accounts.
